The ADEPT Carbon Leadership Programme is a comprehensive, research-led initiative designed to support local highway authorities to measure and reduce their carbon emissions.
Created in partnership with Proving Services and funded by DfT, this authoritative programme provides a comprehensive and strategic approach to carbon management.
What is the programme?
The ADEPT Carbon Leadership Programme helps local highway authorities (LHAs) measure and reduce their carbon emissions. It provides a simple, standardised way to calculate how much carbon is emitted by highways services for road construction and maintenance activities.
The programme also assesses each LHA's carbon management programme relative to best practice.
Combined, these assessments can be used to define practical steps towards reducing the carbon footprint of local highway services.
The programme consists of two core modules:
- Carbon Footprint Assessment
- Best Practice Carbon Assessment
The programme’s process has been designed to answer two key questions:
The programme enables LHAs to:
- Measure and evidence carbon emissions accurately
- Develop practical strategies for emissions reduction
- Improve operational efficiency
- Demonstrate environmental leadership
- Make progress towards net zero targets
