ADEPT’s view on the chancellor’s announcement

The Association of Directors of Environment, Economy, Planning and Transport (ADEPT) has welcomed the investment into infrastructure, the £3bn green jobs plan and the £2bn Green Homes Grant, as announced in today’s summer statement.

Nigel Riglar, ADEPT President said: “As outlined in our recent policy position on clean and green growth, we know that to get the economy back on its feet future economic growth must be resilient and green.

“In particular we welcome the announcement around green jobs, which will help drive a green recovery in our economy. We also welcome the announcement around the Green Homes Grant, which is set to cut carbon emissions across the country.

“Retrofitting homes is vital for communities and the wider built environment – it not only reduces carbon emissions, it also builds resilience to future climate change, reduces fuel poverty and improves health. At the same time, it builds skills and supports low carbon economic development.

“Today’s budget is positive news for cutting carbon and we look forward to receiving more detail on how these schemes will work. However, it can only be a first payment on securing a carbon neutral future and the Association will continue to call for more funding for local authorities, to ensure they can go further and faster and help their local communities and businesses do the same.

“Local authorities provide an indispensable role, providing essential services and leadership for communities and businesses. It is imperative that they receive the funds they need to continue to operate, while at the same time driving and influencing a reduction in carbon emissions.”
