ADEPT comment on the Environment Bill

Darryl Eyers, President of ADEPT, said:

“ADEPT welcomes the Environment Bill, which comes at a critical time in the climate change agenda.

“It offers great ambition and local authorities are ready to take the lead in driving environmental improvements. The independence of the Office for Environmental Protection will go a long way in supporting this. However, it is essential the necessary resources and finances must be in place if targets are to be met and delivery effective.

“The protection of our natural environment is not just the responsibility of Defra. ADEPT believes that it should be at the heart of all government policy-making and, in particular, embedded into the transport, economic and infrastructure strategies. This is vital for supporting sustainable growth, while protecting and improving the environment for future generations.

“Moving towards a circular economy is essential if the UK is to meet the challenges ahead, drive up productivity and fulfil its carbon reduction commitments. But it is important to understand how we will get there.

“ADEPT is a leader in adaptation and mitigation and we will work with the Government to ensure that the 25 Year Environment Plan delivers. Intentions now need to turn to actions, so that we become the first generation to leave the environment in a better state than we inherited it.”
